God and Nature's Rebellion

"God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in trouble...we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea Ö" (Psalm 46:1-3a).
Scripture Focus: Psalm 46

We have seen in our lifetime the terrible destructive power of earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes. Nature, helplessly subjected to the fall of all creation (Romans 8:20), heaves, crashes, and twists in violent rebellion to its curse, leaving behind dreadful devastation. These terrifying images are imprinted in our memories.

But this psalmist resolutely plants his feet in the ground and declares, "Go ahead-we will not fear..." There are different images engraved upon his spirit: The Lord of Heaven's Armies; The Lord of Creation; God his fortress; God his refuge and strength-all mightier than anything the earth can deliver. Trust can only trump fear when it has been strengthened by an intimate relationship with God. It is wise to memorize and dwell on heartening verses, asking the Spirit to engrave them on our spirits so they spring to mind in times of crisis. Though for now these things must occur, know that almighty God instantly offers refuge and strength in times of trouble.

Insight: The Lord is bigger and more powerful than anything this angry earth has to offer. He will help us get through anything that comes. Memorize!
