The Heart of Obsession
"And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:19)
Scripture Focus: Luke 12:16-21
A comic on a bulletin board shows an irate artist standing at his easel late at night, palette and brush in hand, shouting at his wife, "Workaholic? Brokers and salesmen are workaholics. Artists are obsessed. There's a difference!"
Difference? Perhaps. But less like apples and oranges, and more like Fuji and Gala. Obsessive immersion in one's profession can begin innocently as we start up the career ladder. In time it may seem to take on a life of its own. Could it be that we become obsessed, not so much with trying to get ahead, as with unwittingly attempting to fill an unrelated void of unmet needs in our hearts?
Longer hours and greater success, however, aren't meant to satisfy our deepest desires and longings. The remedy is not working harder, but letting go and resting in Jesus. When we give Him our striving, needy hearts, He fills them with contentment and peace. Jesus said, "My peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled" (John 14:27).
