A – Adoption by God
“You did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, ‘Abba, Father.’” (Romans 8:15)
Scripture Focus: Romans 8:15-17
All their time, energy, resources, and love—for the rest of their lives. That’s the price our friends Phillip and Becky are paying to adopt two abused children with physical and psychological problems. The unending love, dedication, and self-sacrifice of this young couple is a marvel to us. For better or worse they are committed to giving these boys every right and privilege as though they were their children through natural birth.
Phillip and Becky didn’t have to get involved, but their love led them to the boys in their needs. Nor did God have to adopt us. His love led Him to us in our need.
Through Christ we can call God our Father. We have His own word for this: “To all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12).
He promises to provide for all our needs and gives us the privilege to even address Him by an intimate family name, “Abba”—which could be translated Dear Daddy.
Insight: How can you express your thanks to God for adopting you and giving you all the rights and privileges of being His child?
