In Trouble For Obedience
"Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side...the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it." Matthew 14:22, 24
Scripture Focus: Matthew 14:22-33
Obedience brings blessing; disobedience brings trouble. But sometimes even when we obey, the result is still trouble.
The disciples must have been amazed when Jesus fed more than five thousand people. They may have been curious, too. But Matthew tells us Jesus "immediately" made them get into a boat to cross the lake. Why the need to leave so quickly?
John's account gives the answer. Jesus knew the crowd "intended to come and make him king by force" (John 6:15). He protected His disciples from getting caught up in the crowd's desire to run ahead of God's plan.
Still, the disciples were in a fierce storm because they had obeyed Jesus. Exhausted from fighting the waves, they became terrified at the sight of Him walking on the water. But as Jesus entered the boat, the wind stilled and the disciples had a fresh vision of Jesus, truly the Son of God.
When obedience brings problems, it may be the Lord is doing a greater work than we expected. Will we focus on our troubles or keep our eyes on Jesus?
Insight: Are you struggling with difficulties because you obeyed God? Keep your eyes on Jesus - he will use even trouble for your good and his glory.
