Praying for Boldness

"Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness. After they prayed they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly." (ACTS 4:29, 31)
Scripture Focus: Acts 4:1-31

I invited my friend to church, praying my pastor or someone else would lead him to salvation through Jesus. Church didn't seem to do much for him. The next time we talked he said, "I know I need Jesus in my life. I should have accepted Him last Sunday."

At first I was too timid to say anything, afraid of rejection. I prayed, "Lord, overcome my fears. Give me courage to speak boldly." Then I told him to ask Jesus to come into his life right then. He prayed, "Jesus, forgive my sins. Please do come into my life. I open my heart to you. Thank You for dying on the cross for me and forgiving all my sins. Help me to follow Your plan for my life."

We often lack the courage to tell people about Jesus. We fear rejection and ridicule. Or we're afraid we won't say the right thing and goof it all up. We may not have all the answers to the questions they might ask. We need to pray the same prayer the early believers did and be assured that our confidence in who Jesus is and what He has done in our lives will spur us on.

Insight: When we ask God to help us talk to people about Jesus, we receive boldness and blessings, some will even open their hearts to him.

Talking Friend to Friend

"Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise. the prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective." (JAMES 5:13, 16B)
Scripture Focus: James 5:13-18

Prayer is praising God for who He is, thanking Him for all He has done for us in the past and for everything He is doing for us today. In prayer we declare our trust for all He will do for us in the future. We pray for others, confess sins, and share our concerns.

We will meet several people from the Bible over the next few studies and will "eavesdrop" on their prayers. Most are not the lofty, "Churchy" prayers we would expect from some of God's people. They are not elevated or meant to impress. The prayers we find in the Bible come from individuals much like us, ordinary people talking to their extraordinary God. Anyone who knows Him may have a conversation with Him; it doesn't matter what the circumstances. Though we should not approach God without respect, our privilege as believers is to talk to the One who made us, loves us, and has planned our lives.

We also will dwell on some of the prayers of Jesus. They give us more insight to what the Father is like and of the amazing love He has for us.

Insight: We may talk to God as we would talk to our dearest friend, because that is who he is.

+DEV+ Brokenness to Blessing

Brokenness to Blessing

"Our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen." (2 CORINTHIANS 4:17-18)
Scripture Focus: 2 Corinthians 6:3-10

Throughout the month we've seen ways that the Lord pours out His grace when hope seems lost. In the face of sickness, financial ruin, disappointment, confusion or fear, we learn there is no trial too difficult for the strong arm of the Lord. Many of you may even feel, as Paul did, that you are hard pressed, persecuted, and struck down (2 Corinthians 4:8-9). The depth of your pain may be impossible for anyone to understand. But the God who made you understands it all.

If He hadn't reached out to us with the loving plan of the Savior, it would, indeed, be hard to know where to go next. But the words of Jesus Himself beckon us - all who are weary and burdened with the cares of the world - to come to Him. Lay your troubles at the feet of the One who bore our every problem and sin at Calvary. He made a way for us to confess with Paul that in having nothing, we possess everything. Giving up His life and holding onto nothing, Jesus holds you today and into eternity. Brokenness turns to blessing!

Insight: "Therefore, we do not lose heart" (2 Corinthians 4:16a) because Jesus takes us through every trial, already knowing them Himself.

Unlimited Praise

"Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth. praise his name; proclaim his salvation day after day. Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples." (PSALM 96:1-3)
Scripture Focus: Psalm 150

Start your day by giving praise to God. Watch how He will give you reasons to praise Him. It may be something ordinary like a bird's song or something special like the concert that was recently available. I marveled at the sounds of various instruments in an orchestra and the sounds of an accompanying pianist. My heart reaches out in praise to God. But as magnificent as a concert can be, your tired body has to fight falling asleep throughout the performance.

Weariness isn't the only thing that interrupts praise. Angry words or bad news will do the same. When my heart is disturbed, I've learned that dwelling on the details is not productive. Instead I pray, "Thank You, Lord, that You know all about this trial and are in control of the events." Here are words to console you: "For here we do not have an enduring city, but we are looking for the city that is to come. Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise - the fruit of lips that confess His name" (Hebrews 13:14-15).

Insight: The more you give praise to God, the more you will want to praise him by what you say or what you do for others.

Praying for Others

"I urge, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone,This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth." (1 TIMOTHY 2:1-4)
Scripture Focus: Colossians 4:2-6

One summer morning thunder storms delayed flights in Phoenix. A man sat down near me and spoke. Putting aside the book I was reading, I listened to his story. He had been home for the funeral of his sister who had taken her life. Sensing his pain, my heart ached. I did the only thing I knew to do at the time. "May I pray with you?" I offered. He nodded. Taking hold of his hands, I prayed for him. Questions concerning his spiritual condition concerned me after I boarded my plane, so I continued to pray that God would bring others into his life to minister to his spiritual needs.

The Bible urges us to pray for others. That includes our brothers and sisters in Christ. But we also pray for those who do not know Christ. The Holy Spirit teaches us what to say when sometimes we do not even know where to start. "The Lord has assigned to each his task" in sharing the knowledge and goodness of Christ with others (see 1 Corinthians 3:5). As we plant seeds and pray, He causes them to grow.

Insight: Be ready to minister to and pray with people whom God brings into your life. Ask the Holy Spirit for direction.

+DEV+ Walk with God

Walk with God

"Enoch walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him away." (GENESIS 5:24)
"For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God." (Hebrews 11:5b)
Scripture Focus: Hebrews 11:5-6

My doctors tell us walking keeps us in good physical shape, and I agree. As vital as physical conditioning is, our walk with God is more important. Paul said, "Physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come" (1 Timothy 4:8).

Just like two close friends walk, Enoch kept in step with God, not lagging behind or running ahead. His life was pleasing and honoring to God. Like Enoch, we walk with God by faith. The brief reference to Enoch in Genesis seems to indicate that Enoch didn't experience death. Are you wondering if by "walking with God" you might escape death, too? Have you have put your trust in the saving grace of Jesus through His death for you on the cross? Then you have escaped death! Jesus did not escape it, of course; He took it on and conquered it. And He came back from the dead, granting us the comfort of His Holy Spirit so that each day of our lives might be a welcomed walk with Him.

Insight: The best exercise we can have is walking with god. believe that God exists and that he rewards those who seek him. (see Hebrews 11:6).

Where is Your Trust?

"The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? 'I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind, to reward a man according to his conduct'" (JEREMIAH 17:9-10)
Scripture Focus: Luke 12:13-21

Jesus told the parable of the rich fool, a story that reminds us of many people we know and resonates in our own hearts, too. In it the successful farmer felt he could "take life easy; eat, drink and be merry," since he had handily stored all his grain and goods. Wealthy and comfortable, he was not in the least prepared when the voice of God called, demanding his life and pressing him to consider where his possessions would go now.

It is foolish, indeed, to put our trust and hope in the fading stuff of this world. The commercial world constantly presents us with the next kind of clothing, home or vacation we "deserve." The pull is magnetic at times.

Oh, that we would realize soon that our trust and hope must never rest in material goods or in other people. Jeremiah tells us that in doing so we will be "like a bush in the wastelands" (17:6), rooted in nothing, and withering. Put your trust in the Lord, and see that even in times of drought, in Him we will bear much fruit.

Insight: Guard yourself against becoming greedy with money, position, possessions or relationships. instead trust God, the giver of those good things.

Make No Excuse

"One thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus." (PHILIPPIANS 3:13B-14)
Scripture Focus: Matthew 4:18-22; Luke 9:57-62

Peter and his brother Andrew were fishing when Jesus said, "Follow me." Without hesitation, they went. Later, Jesus saw James and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets for the catch. When they heard Jesus' call, they left their father with the nets and followed, too.

Not all people whom Jesus called dropped everything and followed. One man explained that he had to bury his deceased father first. Another promised to join Jesus but only after telling his family good-bye. What Jesus was after in His disciples was their whole heart, not a divided portion or the leftover portion. It would mean being completely sold-out for Christ.

This is the same thing Jesus asks of us today: that we lay aside everything in life that reigns on the throne of our hearts and put Him on the throne instead. Does that seem to be asking too much? Not at all, when we consider that He laid aside all the glory of heaven to pay the price for our sins and win the hard-sought prize of His heart: you and me!

Insight: It takes an attitude of brokenness to forsake our own agenda and obey Jesus in the path of service where he leads us. Follow Him.

God's Hand in Events

"God was with him and rescued him from all his troubles. He gave Joseph wisdom and enabled him to gain the goodwill of Pharaoh king of Egypt." (ACTS 7:9B-10)
Scripture Focus: Genesis 41:41-57

For 13 very detailed chapters in Genesis, we read of the sometimes favored, often thorny life of Joseph. The account reads like a novel, its main character stirring up a wide range of emotions. We shake our heads at young Joseph's tactless way with his brothers, feel sorry for him in his rocky relationship with them, and ache when he's wrongly imprisoned. We cheer when he's elevated by Pharaoh and are moved deeply when he reveals himself to and forgives his brothers. To the close his 110 years, we identify with Joseph.

While there is much for us to learn from his life, the greater theme is how our sovereign God reigns, shaping His salvation plan through any means. Nothing happened to Joseph that was not ordained by the righteous hand of the Lord. No evil befell him or grandeur surrounded him that was not God's design. What Joseph's brothers meant for evil, God intended for good (Genesis 50:19-21). His life which saved many points us to a far greater Redeemer, Jesus, who has saved the world.

Insight: Quiet your heart through hardships and let it well up with gratitude through good times. the Lord is the designer of both!

Finding Rest

"Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." (MATTHEW 11:29, 30)
Scripture Focus: Matthew 11:28-30

Your day at work has been stressful. Heavy traffic slows the drive home. More depressing news awaits you there: a family member has died or sickness has been diagnosed or a close friend's marriage has dissolved. Like the psalmist, you want to say, "Oh, that I had the wings of a dove! I would fly away and be at rest" (Psalm 55:6).

When Jesus' disciples reported the death of John, He got into a boat and started for a solitary place to grieve. At the shore were crowds of people with needs, waiting, like sheep waiting for a shepherd. Jesus showed compassion by healing the sick. As the day wore on, the disciples wanted Jesus to send the people away to get something to eat. Instead, Jesus took five loaves and two fish to feed the multitude. The One who is the Bread of Life met their immediate needs and showed them in yet another way that He would meet their deeper need: that of a Savior. This same Jesus invites us to lay our burdens at His feet and be filled with joy in the hope of eternal life.

Insight: Go to Jesus when you're weary. He promises rest and restoration to prepare you to minister to others.

A Job or a Life?

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." (Joshua 1:9)
Scripture Focus: Joshua 1

As military strategist and Moses' assistant, Joshua was ready to be the next Israelite leader. Any problems that would arise with his new position would be eased by the assurance of God's guidance. Joshua's one directive was to "lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their forefathers to give them."

He would need strength, courage, and obedience to the law. Unlike other professions, there would be no time off, weekends, or vacations. His instructions were "Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be successful" (vs. 8). It was a daunting challenge, but Joshua would not undertake it alone.

God goes with us, too, in our daily occupational efforts. More importantly, He leads us in the battle of our whole lives as we seek to live for Him, standing up against sin in this world. It's more than a job. It's a life, a life already lived out perfectly for us in Jesus Christ.

Insight: Success comes from the sovereign hand of the lord as you faithfully work for him, knowing that your triumphs and even failures are for his glory.

Know Jesus

"Whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." (JOHN 4:14)
Scripture Focus: John 4:4-42

Jesus' encounter with a Samaritan woman brings comfort to the thirsty soul. Resting by the well when she came with her water jar, Jesus asked a simple favor of her. He avoided her comments of moral and cultural differences and didn't argue or intimidate her for what she didn't know. He used water to illustrate living water. At her request for the convenience of "this water so that I won't get thirsty and have to keep coming here," Jesus remained patient. How He would quench her thirst!

Jesus knew full well of her sin yet did not condemn her. He spoke to her of worship that comes from the heart... worship not shaped by outward appearances and judgment. When she saw Him as Messiah, she left her water jar and hurried to tell others about Christ, her Savior.

Jesus knows what is in our hearts, what we are thinking, where we are hurting. In our brokenness before Him, He shows us the truth and lovingly leads us to the Living Water. Every thirst that we will ever have is satisfied in Him.

Insight: Get alone and open up your heart to Jesus. ask him to show you himself and what you truly need.

The Words You Say

"With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God's likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be." (JAMES 3:9-10)
Scripture Focus: James 3:1-12

Our cruise ship's captain steered the large vessel from the harbor out to sea. Days later, we stood on the deck guided by a small rudder, yet sailing easily between walls of glaciers.

I could see why James compares the tongue to a ship's rudder. He also associates it with fire. Fanned by negative feelings, the tongue complains, scolds, manipulates, lies, humiliates. A group of tongues together can destroy someone's character. Although animals of nearly every kind can be tamed, man's own tongue remains wild. Those are strong images for such a small body part!

The bottom line is that our words give us away. What we think finds its way onto our tongues and out the lips, and the result can be devastating. The only way to take our words captive for the Lord is to remember what the Living Word - the Word become flesh - has done for us. Not only did He speak life into being with just a word, He became the spoken and lived-out testimony of hope for us. Let the words of your mouth bring Him praise!

Insight: Out of the well of a heart committed to Christ comes a fountain of words that quench the thirst of spiritually parched lives.

Topic: +DEV+ Know Yourself

Know Yourself

"Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like." (JAMES 1:23-24)
Scripture Focus: Psalm 119:1-16

When my daughters were learning to dress themselves, we frequently reminded them to check their appearance in the mirror. They saw for themselves a smudge of food around the mouth, the blouse buttoned improperly, or the uncombed hair. As they grew, their appearance became important enough that they did not need reminders.

Most of us do not need to be told to check our outward appearance. When it comes to our inner man, it's another story! After all, no one can see sin we're hiding inside until it comes out in words and actions. A family member or friend may have to confront us with sin we try to conceal. Don't wait for that.

Regularly open your Bible and study how your actions align with what God says. What you see in Jesus Christ in God's Word becomes your mirror. It takes humility to get on your knees and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal your sin. Pray about it continually ad see how the Lord changes you. When you take God's Word to heart and admit your sin, ask the Holy Spirit to cleanse you.

Insight: Check your words and actions regularly. Reflect Christ whose perfect life is given for you, even as you fall short again and again.

Forgive and Be Forgiven

"Speak and act as those who are going to be judged by the law that gives freedom, because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment!" (JAMES 2:12-13)
Scripture Focus: Matthew 18:21-35

Jesus told the parable of a master who settled accounts that were owed him. One servant fell to his knees, begging for time to pay back his huge debt. The sympathetic master forgave the servant. Ungratefully, the servant found and tackled a second servant who owed him a small debt. The second servant fell to his knees, begging for mercy. The unforgiving servant - one who already had been shown tremendous grace - refused to forgive a much smaller debt than his own. It's easy to see why the master would throw the unforgiving servant into jail.

We read this story and wonder how the first fellow could be so foolish when such great compassion was shown to him. Yet when we come face to face with our own merciless spirit, we see that we are very much like him.

An unforgiving attitude tortures you, keeping you awake at night. Physical ailments may follow. Instead of clenching your fist, open your hands toward heaven - to the One who has forgiven you! - and say aloud, "Lord, I forgive the person who has wronged me."

Insight: It's more important for you to be forgiving than it is for you to be right. release your unforgiving spirit and find freedom in Christ.

Encourage Young People

"Encourage the young men to be self-controlled. In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned." (TITUS 2:6-8A)
Scripture Focus: 1 Timothy 4

"Oh, to be young again," many of us say, admiring youthfulness around us. Have you wished you could help a younger person avoid mistakes you've made in your lifetime? Paul took note of young Timothy whose sincere faith, instilled by his grandmother Lois and mother Eunice, was evident. How good to see the zeal of young believers!

While Paul himself lay in a Roman prison, he recalled how he fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith. Facing execution, he mentored young Timothy. Paul wrote two letters to Timothy, telling him what to expect in a leadership position, urging him to preach the Word and beware of potential opposition even from those in the church.

No matter what your age, there are people in your life younger than you. Perhaps God is speaking to you about mentoring - a son or daughter, a grandchild, a nephew or niece, a friend. You could give advice or help where it is sought; you could pray and encourage at all times. Let the love of Jesus be reflected in you.

Insight: Sacrifice your time and abilities to give a young person a hand and some heartfelt support in his work and walk with the lord.

The Lord of the Storm

"Then Peter got down out of the boat and walked on the water to Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, 'Lord, save me!'" (MATTHEW 14:29)
Scripture Focus: Matthew 14:22-36

The disciples went out to sea while Jesus went to the hills to pray. That night a strong wind blew waves against the boat. The disciples' fears grew when they saw "a ghost" walking toward them on the water. Then they recognized Jesus' voice above the storm. "Take courage! Don't be afraid."

For the moment, Peter was filled with courage. Drawn by the comforting sound of Jesus' words, he stepped out of the boat and onto the water. He even made it for a few steps as long as he kept his focus on Jesus rather than on the wind and waves.

This is exactly how we often find ourselves: facing troubles and fears, hearing the trustworthy call of Jesus, going to Him but faltering in our faith. Take heart, because when we are weak, He is strong. When we are sinking, He is reaching out His hand and catching us. When there is nothing in us that can save, His mighty arm is outstretched to us. Pulled under by sickness, unemployment, relationship conflict? Know that the Lord of the storm has you in His grip.

Insight: "You Will Keep In Perfect Peace Him Whose Mind Is Steadfast, Because He Trusts In You." (Isaiah 26:3)
