The Final Prayer in the Bible
"We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express" (Romans 8:26).
Scripture Focus: Romans 8:17-27
There is meant to be an element of groaning in our prayers, not just for us, but also for the world. It's a groaning that strains for the future like a woman in labor strains to give birth. Paul tells us the whole creation is groaning in eager anticipation of seeing the sons of God come into their glory and that the Holy Spirit is in us, groaning with that same desire.
We're meant to join in the groaning until we see justice done, suffering ended, and the whole earth filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea.
We groan because we know the Lamb has triumphed, and that a new heaven and a new earth will burst forth one day as a result of His victory. We groan because we know Jesus is coming again, and as His bride we're looking forward to that day like it's the only day on the calendar. We groan because we have the first fruits of transformation in us; we long to be fully changed. Take comfort in the Holy Spirit's nearness through life's struggles.
Insight: "He who testifies to these things says, 'Yes, I am coming quickly.' Amen. Come, Lord Jesus" (Revelation 22:20).
