Set Free by the Gospel
"But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law, to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons"
(Galatians 4:4-5).
Scripture Focus: Romans 5:12-14, Galatians 2:15-16
I wonder how long Adam and Eve lived the perfect life before even that wasn't enough to satisfy them. We would've failed just as miserably, and we have continued in our depravity. Every one of us is in dire need of a Savior.
Only through Jesus can we be set free from the chains of trying to justify ourselves. What tempted Adam and Eve so was the notion that they could take care of things themselves and "be like God." What sounded freeing to them was actually enslaving. That's how sin has always been in a person's life, from the moment he first visibly disobeys his parents to the time, when the tyranny of sin overwhelms or even lands a person in prison. We think it will free us, but it only binds us more.
Adam and Eve and all God's elect knew the promise of the Messiah to come, by way of the prophecies and their fulfillment. This was the Gospel which was preached from the beginning. They looked forward hopefully as we look back to the cross gratefully.
Insight: The Old and New Testaments are one book of life. Don't try to separate them. God is the same now as He was then.
