Food for Newborns

"Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation." (Peter 2:2)

Scripture Focus: 1 Peter 1:23-2:3

Think of a breastfed baby. From almost its first breath, perfect food is offered. This milk contains the ideal nutrients to help a brand new person thrive. And it's always available - no waiting. In fact, a breastfeeding mother knows that if she keeps her child waiting, she'll hear about it - quite loudly! 

Christians are like newborn babies. We constantly need spiritual food. Peter explains that the perfect nourishment for our growth is God's "living and enduring" Word. The Bible is rich provision for our souls: it reveals our holy Creator, exposes our sin, records God's faithfulness, and spotlights our Savior. Forgiveness, peace, joy, eternal life...all are offered in its pages. 

One way we "grow up in our salvation" and take in this "pure spiritual milk" is by gathering as a congregation to hear faithful, biblical preaching. We are a family after all, and each of us is equally dependent on the eternal Word for our salvation and our growth. Is it any wonder that Peter urges us to "crave" it?

Insight: Ask your gracious Father to increase your appetite for His word. He loves you and truly wants you to taste His goodness.
