Black Clouds
“Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress. He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed.” (Psalm 107:28-29)
Scripture Focus: Psalm 107:4-32
Severe thunderstorms surrounded us as we drove toward home. We hoped to get there before the storms caught us, but suddenly we saw a huge ominous cloud bearing down on us. We pulled off the road as the wind and rain hit our van, making it sway. Hailstones hit the windows so hard we feared they would break. Cautiously driving towards home, we kept watching those menacing clouds.
Do we find ourselves fearfully scanning the sky for the black clouds in our lives: unfaithfulness, unhappiness, criticism, job loss, worries over health and money. Maybe we even worry sometimes about whether or not anyone loves us. We create our own hail and thunder in our insecurities. We need Jesus, our Master Teacher to teach us how to get past those terrifying black clouds.Jesus has already calmed most of those storm clouds before they even reach us. And when He doesn’t, He promises to guide us through them. Whenever we’re frightened by troubling things, we can cry out, depending on Him to still the storm.
Insight: God understands the real and imagined storms we face. He will bring us out of our distress when we turn to Him in faith.
