Watching Over Us
“The Lord watches over you—the Lord is your shade at your right hand....The Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.” (Psalm 121:5, 8)
Scripture Focus: Psalm 121:3-8
Several years ago while grabbing the trash, I headed out to work. As I stepped through the door, my foot caught on the metal threshold. In slow motion I felt myself twist and fly out the door. Two seconds later, I was lying flat on the cold, hard ground.
My ankle hurt, but I needed to get to work. Grumbling, I hobbled around picking up the scattered garbage. A few hours later my ankle had grown to twice its size. My boss sent me to the doctor. After getting my sprained ankle treated, I went home and sat with my foot propped up. My mind was filled with complaints.
Suddenly, I realized how fortunate I had been. I hadn’t broken anything; it was just a sprain. I had forgotten to be thankful for God’s protection.
God’s love for us guarantees His constant watchfulness and care. He is always on duty, whether we’re awake or sleeping. He’s there for us. Even when we face serious trials, we can be sure that God has allowed them in love—for our good and for His glory.
Insight: God does not keep us from having trouble, but He does promise to be with us. “Your consolation brought joy to my soul” (Psalm 94:19).
