+DEV+ In Everything, By Prayer

Date: February 27, 2014 10:23 PM
Topic: +DEV+  In Everything, By Prayer

In Everything, By Prayer

"As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by failing to pray for you. And I will teach you the way that is good and right." (1 Samuel 12:23)

Scripture Focus: 1 Samuel 12:16-24

Praying for others is simply bringing someone before the Lord in a time of need. Paul tells us to "pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests" (Ephesians 6:18). He even goes on to ask the believers in Ephesus to pray for him (vs.19-20), reminding us that whether we are "baby Christians" - just new in the Lord - or long-time Christians, we still have needs to lay before the Lord in prayer. Paul also tells us to "not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God" (Philippians 4:6). We really do have a Heavenly Father who delights in hearing of our anxieties, concerns and issues through prayer.

We were sitting at our dining table with our two daughters, age twelve and nine. We mentioned that a friend was having a very serious surgery and we needed to pray for him. The older of the girls said, "Well, what are we waiting for? Let's pray right now!" People need prayer. What are we waiting for?

Insight: Being motivated by our love for God will lead us to a ministry of intercession for others.

+DEV+ Pray With Joy

Pray With Joy

"I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now..." (Philippians 1:3-5)

Scripture Focus: Philippians 1:1-11

One of the great joys we know as Christians is praying for each other. Paul begins his letter to the church in Philippi with words about the joy it is to pray for them because of the partnership they share through Jesus Christ.

Do you "pray with joy"? It's easy for our prayers to be focused on the needs, tragedies, and heartaches in our lives and those we pray for. Sometimes prayer only comes when an unexpected catastrophe or daunting challenge faces us, and we run to God in desperation. Where is the joy in prayer then?

Thankfully, God listens to and regards our desperate cries as much as our praises and words of thanks. He loves to hear us! Paul prayed with joy, remembering how he and his Philippian friends shared in the good news of Jesus. When we remember that we are partners in the Gospel with people around the world, our hearts turn to joy. Even if you are a new believer, there is probably someone in your life who is a Christ-follower who knows and understands the joy you both share in Jesus.

Insight: You can trust that whenever God is ready to do something new with His people, He will set them praying.

+DEV+ The Lord Directs His Love

Date: February 25, 2014 11:16 PM
Topic: +DEV+  The Lord Directs His Love

The Lord Directs His Love

"By day the Lord directs his love, at night his song is with me - a prayer to the God of my life." (Psalm 42:8)

Scripture Focus: Psalm 42:1-11

I try to read from the book of Psalms each day, and this particular verse rings so true in my heart. Often at the end of a hectic day and during the first moments my head hits the pillow, I sense the Lord is very present. It's not unusual for the words of a song to come to me. It might be from the old Swedish hymn, "Day by Day and with each passing moment, strength I find to meet my trials here," or from a new chorus, "The Power of the Cross." At night the Lord's song truly is with me.

The psalmist is reminding us of God's love during the day - even when life isn't going well (vs. 5-6); yet at night, He comforts us with His song. I remember a book entitled God Works the Night Shift. The author wrote about God's acts of love upon us while we sleep and why we can trust Him in times of darkness. An older lady was dealing with heavy life issues. Her prayer at night was, "Lord, I leave them with You. No point in both of us staying awake!" Enjoy your Savior's warm hand of eternal love upon you.

Insight: Cling to Him who neither slumbers nor sleeps, who loves you and often works within you through the night.

+DEV+ Come to the Wedding Party

Sorry I missed yesterday, I got lost in time....

Date: February 24, 2014 10:14 PM
Topic: +DEV+  Come to the Wedding Party

Come to the Wedding Party

"Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, 'Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.'" John 2:9-10

Scripture Focus: John 2:1-11

Can you imagine the joy of having Jesus at your party? The master of the banquet in this story probably did not realize the One who created the very vines and fruit that made the wine was right there in his midst. Jesus was concerned about a detail like running out of wine at a wedding. He was and is Lord over all!

It's a lot easier to say with written words that we are a part of a greater party for Jesus than it is to live that out in reality. It seems that each day brings new worries, letdowns, injustices and emergencies...not exactly the stuff of parties. Yet this is where He meets us. Into our world of heartaches, Jesus comes near. He carries us through life's agonies so that we know His mercy and grace. Jesus may have provided wine at the wedding that day, but His greater providence was of His own shed blood so that all of us who believe would know the true celebration of life in Him. Don't miss the picture of what the Water into Wine miracle showed, and don't miss your invitation to the party!

Insight: Having blessed us, Jesus invites us to His party. We are part of His family and thus covered by His love and grace.

+DEV+ Celebration Of Faithfulness

Date: February 20, 2014 10:23 PM
Topic: +DEV+  Celebration Of Faithfulness

Celebration Of Faithfulness

"Mordecai... had them celebrate...the time when the Jews got relief from their enemies, and as the month when their sorrow was turned into joy and their mourning into a day of celebration." (Esther 9:20-22)

Scripture Focus: Esther 9:20-32

From the Old Testament story of Esther, we learn about the Jewish celebration of the Festival of Purim. It was to be a celebration of the nation's survival after God-fearing Esther and her uncle Mordecai were used strategically by God to save His chosen people whom the enemy tried to destroy. The festival would commemorate the defeat of Haman's evil plan and celebrate God's faithfulness. It was an occasion of genuine joy born out of sorrow. The people would rest, share food with each other, and offer gifts to the poor.

It is so like our God to send in Esther as a rescuer of His people, someone who seemed unlikely and who came just when the people needed it most. With the lives of all the Jews about to be stamped out, it is no wonder Mordecai described their joy as coming out of mourning.

And isn't that the same basis for our true joy today? Even while we were yet sinners - people deserving of death - God sent His Rescuer for us. Jesus brings joy out of the sorrows of our lives. Let's celebrate!

Insight: We have much to celebrate because our King bore our sorrows and sins on the cross, bringing ultimate joy from the ultimate injustice.

+DEV+ Righteousness Is Joy

Date: February 19, 2014 10:21 PM
Topic: +DEV+  Righteousness Is Joy

Righteousness Is Joy

"A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones." (Proverbs 17:22)

Scripture Focus: Proverbs 17:17-22

In his book of wisdom, Solomon speaks of joy and a cheerful spirit. "The prospect of the righteous is joy" (10:28). "A happy heart makes the face cheerful" (15:13). "A cheerful look brings joy to the heart, and good news gives health to the bones" (15:30). In this world where confusion, false teachings, and spiritual manipulation thrive, a word that brings joy and even healing is welcomed, indeed.

We're constantly reminded that our society is one of the most prosperous generations in history. But we're also one of the most spiritually anemic. As believers who know true joy, we may be the means by which others meet Jesus. Our very countenance becomes a message-sender to those who are unsaved. We are the instruments He uses to draw others to Himself. As they search for life's answers, our cheerful hearts become good medicine to a hurting, needy world. The joy we share in a host of practical ways may bring not only a healing and relief for the day, but it may be what God uses to bring salvation
for eternity.

Insight: Let the joy of Jesus in your heart come through. and be ready when others want to know what gives you such joy and peace.

+DEV+ Rejoice!

Date: February 18, 2014 9:26 PM
Topic: +DEV+  Rejoice!

Rejoice!

"Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!"(Philippians 4:4)

Scripture Focus: Philippians 4:1-8

In 1988 a friend’s wife recently went to Zambia where she visited the Hope Ministry orphanage, school and church. She was impressed by the happy dispositions of the children, young in faith and vibrant in their love of the Lord. Most of their parents have died from AIDS, but through love and commitment, the orphaned children have been brought to faith in Christ. You would be moved to observe their joy in what little they have, their readiness to offer love to each other, and their desire to celebrate their faith through their church and village friendships. Christ is evident in them!

Listening to his wife's stories prompts me to view my present circumstances in light of the eternal promises of God. You and I, too, are His works in progress which He will complete one day. Meanwhile, being confident of who we are in Him, we can respond to life with joy and prayer instead of worry and fear. Those children in Zambia have basically "nothing," yet they live in the tender love of the Savior and possess "everything." So do we!

Insight: We must walk by faith, fixing our eyes on Jesus until we see Him face to face.

+DEV+ Joy In The Holy Spirit

Date: February 14, 2014 12:26 AM
Topic: +DEV+  Joy In The Holy Spirit

Joy In The Holy Spirit

"For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit." (Romans 14:17)

Scripture Focus: Romans 14:12-23

Sometimes it's truly hard when the difficulties of life rise up against us to find joy or to enjoy the "new life" that Christ has secured for us. Joy has been described  as "the flag flown over the castle of your heart when the king has taken up residence and rules from your heart's throne." God's Kingdom is within us, and as we live out our relationship with Him, His touch on our life yields His spiritual blessing. Joy comes when we discover Someone who makes a difference for us. That is the most obvious advertisement of our Christian faith.

In 1974 several of my Army friends and I traveled to a retreat center in Germany. We'd set off on a weekend to rediscover God in a special way and enjoy fellowship together. What a joyful time it was! We knew that in spite of losing  the war in Southeast Asia and casting a shadow over everything, all was well between the Lord and us. May you know God's gift of joy today, even in the battles of hard circumstances.

Insight: God's gift of joy is based on His unchanging promises and the spontaneous work of the Holy Spirit within us.

+DEV+ I Want To Sing Your Praises

Date: February 12, 2014 10:08 PM
Topic: +DEV+  I Want To Sing Your Praises

I Want To Sing Your Praises

"Day and night they never stop saying: 'Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come.'" (Revelation 4:8)

Scripture Focus: Psalm 99

One of the things I'm looking forward to in heaven is being able to sing on key. I love to sing, and I do so with gusto at times, much to the chagrin of those sitting near me in church. I fully expect that my glorified body will have a perfect singing voice, too.

The book of Revelation records a number of the songs of heaven, and the very first one (4:8) praises the holiness of God. This song is sung by four living creatures, but as the music progresses, more and more of the heavenly chorus join in until all creation is singing praises to the Lord (5:13). Can you imagine the magnificent sound?

Some of us may not yet have the kind of singing voices we think are worthy, but one day we will. In the meantime, we can "tune up" for those heavenly songs by glorifying God with our lives. Jesus said, "This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples" (John 15:8). Won't you join me in singing with passion a song of praise to our great and holy King? "Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!"

Insight:  "Lord, I want to sing your praises with my whole life. Help me to convey something of Jesus' beauty as I do so."

+DEV+ Holy And Godly

Date: February 10, 2014 10:55 PM
Topic: +DEV+  Holy And Godly

Holy And Godly

"Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed it’s coming." (2 Peter 3:11-12)

Scripture Focus: Galatians 5:22-26

In commenting on these verses, Michael Green says that "a man's character is the only thing he can take out of this life with him." Actually, we do not even take that! When I leave here, I will leave clinging only to the grace and stronghold of my Savior, Jesus Christ, not anything I have done. Our world will not carry on forever, but those of us who are believers in Christ will. So with that humbling reality, what kind of people ought we to be while we remain on this earth?

Peter tells us in two words: holy and godly. Because we belong to God, we should reflect His character qualities in our lives the same way a child reflects much of his parents in his upbringing. The Holy Spirit gives us the power to be like Jesus, holy and godly.

If you read the list of the "fruit of the Spirit" in Galatians 5:22-23, you'll find a perfect description of the character of Jesus Christ. Those are the qualities that the Holy Spirit will increasingly cultivate in our lives as well, reflecting our holy and godly Savior.

Insight:  "Father, help me realize how important these few years on earth are and to concentrate on things of eternal value."

+DEV+ You Are A Chosen People

Date: June 28, 2012 1:27 PM
Topic: +DEV+  You Are A Chosen People

You Are A Chosen People

"You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light." (1 Peter 2:9)

Scripture Focus: 1 Peter 2:9-12

Not only are we a member of a "holy priesthood" (2:5), but also it is a "royal priesthood." We are related to the King of kings. Peter sums up what happens to us as we are grafted into God's magnificent kingdom: we have been chosen; we are called out of darkness into light; we belong to Him; we are priests to God; we are holy. And there is a purpose in all of this. In each of these ways God has worked through us, we are to declare His praises. We are to proclaim His eminent qualities, reflecting His grace and His glory.

Some elementary school classes have "show and tell" time each week. The children bring a special object to school to show others and to tell about it. Every child loves those few moments in front of the class to spotlight the precious item from home. "Show and tell" time is one of the things the bigger kids usually miss having. If we take Peter's words to heart, we'll see that "show and tell" is alive and well for us as Christians. We can show God's virtues and tell others about Him!

Insight:  "You are all I want to show others. let your glory - not my own - come through as I tell others of Jesus."

+DEV+ We Are A Holy Priesthood

Date: February 4, 2014 9:21 PM
Topic: +DEV+  We Are A Holy Priesthood

We Are A Holy Priesthood

"You also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ." (1 Peter 2:5)

Scripture Focus: 1 Peter 2:4-9

In the last few years I've realized that perhaps the most important thing I can do for others is pray for them. That is not the limit of my responsibility, but it is the focus of it. And God has seen to it that I am uniquely equipped for such a ministry, for I belong to a "holy priesthood."

Old Testament priests represented the people before God, offering sacrifices and prayers on their behalf. The priests were anointed and set apart for that ministry (Exodus 30:30). We as Christians have received the anointing of the Holy Spirit (1 John 2:20) and are thus a "holy priesthood." We, too, are to offer "spiritual sacrifices," of which prayer is a very real part. James tells us to pray for each other, for the "prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective" (5:16).

David prayed, "May my prayer be set before you like incense; may the lifting up of my hands be like the evening sacrifice" (Psalm 141:2). Let's offer up prayers for many around us, prayers made acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

Insight: "Lord, I pray for many I know who are lonely, sad, desperate, in trouble, in pain, feeling hopeless. may Your kingdom come in their lives."

+DEV+ The Necessity of Discipline

Date: February 4, 2014 5:06 AM
Topic: +DEV+  The Necessity of Discipline

The Necessity of Discipline

"No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it." (Hebrews 12:11)

Scripture Focus: Hebrews 12:4-15

Are there any words in Scripture more readily agreed with than "No discipline seems pleasant at the time"? Whether it's a spanking to improve behavior or a diet to improve the waistline, who likes the discipline when it is happening? The word translated "discipline" can also mean physical "training," the metaphor the Hebrews author uses.

Several students at the high school where I teach are on the track team and are beginning training for the season. Most of them are sore, tired, and grumpy. Some already talk of quitting, saying the training is just too hard. But one young man, Cliff, has a different attitude. He admits the training is difficult, yet he looks forward to it. Why? Because he hopes to go to college on a track scholarship and knows the training is necessary if he is to stand a chance at reaching his goal.

God's "goal" in disciplining us is "that we might share in his holiness" (vs.10). Our training is sure to involve hardship. Let's fix our eyes on our front-runner, Jesus, who endured the discipline of the cross for us.

Insight:"Thank you for putting me in your 'training program' and for Jesus who already endured and conquered it for me!"

+DEV+ Holiness Is A Process

Date: February 3, 2014 1:40 AM
Topic: +DEV+  Holiness Is A Process

Holiness Is A Process

"By that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. ... because by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy." (Hebrews 10:10, 14)

Scripture Focus: Philippians 1:3-11

At first glance today's verses may look contradictory. First the author says we "have been made holy," and then he says we "are being made holy." Which is it? Past tense or present? In fact, it is both!

Holiness is a product and a process. We usually think of the product as "holiness" and call the process "sanctification." Holiness, the product, is being like Christ, God's ultimate goal for us (Romans 8:29). Sanctification, the process, begins the moment of our salvation and continues throughout our earthly life. We've no need to be discouraged that we haven't arrived once and for all as good and consistent Christ-followers. He is working on us day in and day out - through all our shortcomings and failures - just as surely as a teacher sticks with a student to the end of the coursework. He will never give up on us.

The triumphs we occasionally see in our lives are just pointers to the great triumph our Savior won for us. His faithfulness encourages and assures us that He will see the job through.

Insight:  "Thank you for your faithfulness. I would have given up on me. Work your purposes in me, making me more like you in character and conduct."
