Jesus, Suffered For Us

"Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe... And they slapped him in the face." John 19:1-3

Scripture Focus: Isaiah 53:3

When Jesus gave up His throne, came to earth, and lived as a man, He did so to show us His understanding of our imprisonment to sin and suffering. His heart grieved for us in our sin. He wept.

Jesus Christ demonstrated an understanding of our suffering and need for rescue. He Himself suffered an agonizing death in order to rescue us. Not only was He compassionate in our hurts, but He hurt himself so that we would have the promise of a future without worry, regret or pain. The mocking robe He wore on the way to the cross will become the robe of righteousness that He gives to us!

The fact that Jesus suffered worse than we ever will - even the Father, forsook Him to His death - doesn't always bring us comfort alone. But it should be a reminder to us of the reality of our status as sinners and what it took to save us. It should stir in us the knowledge that we weren't made to suffer, that God has bigger plans for us in the eternal kingdom, when Jesus comes again to finish what He started on the cross.

Insight: Jesus has known suffering as we do, and He suffered for us, that we might know a future day of no suffering.
