A Job or a Life?
"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." (Joshua 1:9)
Scripture Focus: Joshua 1
As military strategist and Moses' assistant, Joshua was ready to be the next Israelite leader. Any problems that would arise with his new position would be eased by the assurance of God's guidance. Joshua's one directive was to "lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their forefathers to give them."
He would need strength, courage, and obedience to the law. Unlike other professions, there would be no time off, weekends, or vacations. His instructions were "Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be successful" (vs. 8). It was a daunting challenge, but Joshua would not undertake it alone.
God goes with us, too, in our daily occupational efforts. More importantly, He leads us in the battle of our whole lives as we seek to live for Him, standing up against sin in this world. It's more than a job. It's a life, a life already lived out perfectly for us in Jesus Christ.
Insight: Success comes from the sovereign hand of the lord as you faithfully work for him, knowing that your triumphs and even failures are for his glory.
