Hosanna! Hosanna!
"The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, 'Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!'" (Matthew 21:9)
Scripture Focus: Matthew 21:1-11
The psalmist, Asaph, in Psalm 80 uses a repeated refrain: "Restore us, O God; make your face shine upon us, that we may be saved." Salvation and restoration go together.
Many in the crowd who shouted "Hosanna!" (meaning "save us") thought that Jesus was a political Messiah coming to restore the kingdom to Israel. Even the apostles echoed these thoughts prior to the Ascension (Acts 1:6).
However, the salvation promised through Christ is a spiritual matter concerning the life or death of the soul. When the birth of Jesus was explained to Joseph by the angel, he was told, "you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins" (Matthew 1:21).
And finally, in Revelation 7 we read of a heavenly consummation of Jesus' earthly Triumphal Entry. "They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. And they cried out in a loud voice: 'Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.'" May we join that celebration, too!
