"Then I said to them, 'You see the trouble we are in: Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned with fire. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem.’ " (Nehemiah 2:17)
Scripture Focus: Nehemiah 2:17-20
What do you do when you are confronted with unpleasant truth? Do you face it head on or retreat in denial?
Denial is often our initial response when we do not want to face unpleasant facts. When we ignore the truth, we fool ourselves into thinking we don't have to deal with it. Still, the truth remains.
Nehemiah knew better than to deny the truth, no matter how distasteful it was. After he inspected the city's walls and gates, he called the Jewish leaders and spoke plainly. He told them of trouble, ruins, and fiery destruction. Only then did he challenge them to rebuild.
In our enthusiasm to build great things for God, we may prefer to avoid facing the ugly truth of our sin. But the Lord does not want us to avoid it; He wants us to bring it to Him. When we do, He takes the brokenness in our lives and makes us whole. Jesus Christ's sacrifice on the cross covers all of our sin - no exceptions. Then He gives us the power to serve Him in truth because He is truth!
