Guard What You Build
"I said to them, 'While the gatekeepers are still on duty, have them shut the doors and bar them. Also appoint residents of Jerusalem as guards, some at their posts and some near their own houses.'" (Nehemiah 7:3)
Scripture Focus: Nehemiah 7:1-7
"Never put a fox in charge of the hen house." This lesson applies far beyond raising chickens. Whenever we trust the untrustworthy, we put a fox in charge of the hens.
Nehemiah carefully chose individuals to guard what he built. He selected "a man of integrity" who "feared God more than most men do" to protect the city (Nehemiah 7:2). He knew it was not enough to build well and then leave his work vulnerable to enemy attack. Without vigilance, his labor would be undone.
Let's be watchful as we serve God today. The apostle Peter tells us that our "enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour" (1 Peter 5:8). While we work to build strong families, the devil toils to destroy our relationships. As we build bold testimonies, our enemy seeks to trap us with secret sin.
But this same enemy has been defeated by the cross of Christ. Jesus is our Savior and our Guardian. He enables us to stand firm and protects us from harm as we serve Him.
