Living Stones
"As you come to him, the living Stone you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ." (1 Peter 2:4-5)
Scripture Focus: 1 Peter 2:4-10
Have you ever eaten boneless ribs or jumbo shrimp? Maybe you've spoken in a loud whisper or referred to something as awfully nice? Each of these phrases is an oxymoron, the term given when two seemingly contradictory words are combined.
"Living stones" is also an oxymoron. Stones are dead. In fact, they never had life. What a perfect way to illustrate our condition. When Adam sinned in the Garden, the spirit in him - that part of him that enabled him to commune with God - died. From that day, every human being has been born with a dead spirit.
The only way we are made spiritually alive is by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. This happens when we receive the gift of salvation our heavenly Father offers through His Son, Jesus. When the Holy Spirit unites with our spirit, He brings new life. We become living stones, able to be fitted together with other living stones to build the kingdom of Jesus Christ. Through Him we have life and purpose.
