Message of Honor

"You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus”. ”I am the Lord's servant,” Mary answered. “May it be to me as you have said."  (LUKE 1:30-31, 38)

Scripture Focus: Luke 1:26-38;  22:39-44

Mary was a young, poor girl from Nazareth in Galilee, and Gabriel was sent to her with this message: "Don't be afraid, for you have found favor with God" (vs. 30). Though Mary was very young, she understood Gabriel had come from the presence of God Almighty, and his message, overwhelming as it was, needed to be accepted and obeyed. In doing so, she brought honor to herself and more importantly to God. It would not be an easy burden for her, being the mother of our Lord. From the beginning there would be misunderstandings and talk, but she still chose God's will over hers.

We should remember from Mary's life that God never works in isolation, even when it seems that it is only our life that is affected. In His hands the threads that may appear to be tangled will be woven together with perfect purpose and meaning for us and others. That is just His way. Because of a heart that honored God, Mary was chosen to help affect the course of world history. Oh, that our hearts might be so pure!

Insight: One day, in the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus would choose the Father's will over his own, bringing honor to god and redemption to all humankind.
