Following God's Plan
"'I am the Lord's servant,' Mary answered. 'May it be to me as you have said.' Then the angel left her." Luke 1:38
Scripture Focus: Luke 1:46-55, 22:39-44
Mary's reaction to the most staggering news any woman has ever received is laudable. Though initially confused, she completely accepted the Lord's will, submitting herself in obedience to Him. Despite what following God's plan might cost her in terms of her reputation and relationship with Joseph, she apparently had no qualms about following it, beautifully expressing her heart to God in the Magnificat, or Mary's Song (Luke 1:46-55).
It makes sense that so obedient a person would be chosen to be the mother of Jesus. His entire earthly life was one of submission and obedience to the Father, culminating in His willingness to follow God's plan of redemption for mankind no matter what agony it cost. He, too, beautifully expressed His heart to His Father: "Yet not my will, but yours be done" (Luke 22:42).
Obedience and submission are what God requires of us also if we claim the name of Christ. God will do something beautiful within us - giving us His "family traits" - as we respond to Him in love and adoration.
Insight: "For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother." (Matthew 12:50)
