The Egyptian Plagues

"I leave to you the honor of setting the time for me to pray for you...it will be as you say, so that you may know there is no one like the Lord our God." Exodus 8:9A, 10B

Scripture Focus: Exodus 7:14-24

God sent ten plagues to persuade Pharaoh to release the Hebrew people from slavery. The plagues, beginning with the river turning to blood and ending with the death of every firstborn son, were an invitation to the Egyptians to find hope in the one true God. God taught them of His sovereignty by exposing the powerlessness of the Egyptian gods. For example, Hapi (the god of the Nile River) was incapable of keeping himself from turning to blood. Each plague defeated one of the animistic gods of Egypt. Even Pharaoh, who was worshiped as a god, lost his firstborn son in the end. God gave the Egyptians a bold demonstration of His power and showed them the wisdom of worshiping Him.

In later times God offered an invitation to us to believe in Him through Jesus, who shed His blood in payment for sin and whom God raised from the dead. No other God has done this. We have before us the opportunity to follow the One who created all things, holds all things in balance, and demonstrates His Love to us like no other.

Insight: God demonstrates his control over all things. He is the one who softens hard hearts.
