Good News
“The Lord has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives” (Isaiah 61:1-2).
Scripture Focus: Isaiah 61:1-7
Isaiah assured his people that a Savior would come someday and make things right for those who had suffered greatly. Centuries after Isaiah wrote God’s words, Jesus quoted him as evidence that He had come to fulfill that prophecy (Luke 4:16-22).
Today we can look back and see the fulfillment of his words in our own lives. More relevant than ever, the Good News confronts us in our brokenness as we are imprisoned by fear and frustration. A retired officer shared his broken heart with me. He had been strong and tough when he was suddenly crushed with a long illness. I told him about the hope that comes from faith in Jesus.
Like that officer, sometimes we feel our suffering is going to go on forever and we long for relief. When we turn to Jesus, He takes over and releases us from our brokenness, disappointments and thwarted desires as no one else can.
Isaiah shared the good news of Jesus’ coming with his people who longed to be delivered. God expects us to do the same for people today.
Insight: What a privilege and solemn responsibility God gives us–to tell needy people the Good News, that Jesus saves!
