A Righteous Song

“I will sing of your love and justice; to you, O Lord, I will sing praise. I will be careful to lead a blameless life. . . . I will walk in my house with a blameless heart.” (Psalm 101:1-2).
Scripture Focus: Psalm 101

Some Bible scholars believe that Psalm 101 may have been written by David to be sung at his son Solomon’s coronation. It shows David’s heart for God which, unfortunately, was not copied by his son with the same fervor.

David’s purpose was to proclaim his commitment to be God’s righteous leader. He praised God for reigning with love and justice, a pattern he wanted to follow as he led God’s people.

Psalm 101, with its emphasis on purity, is a wake-up call for all of us. Every day “vile things” and “men of perverse hearts” assault our senses wherever we turn. It is so easy to become desensitized to the evils of the world and slip almost unaware into their ways. When that happens, it is no wonder unbelievers refuse to listen to us. Our personal lives do not back up our song, and they know it.

David prayed that he would have nothing to do with evil in any form. May that be our daily prayer, so we can sing a righteous song in a sinful world.

Insight: There’s only one way to deal with sin—hate it and refuse to compromise it. Don’t try to justify it or argue with it. Instead, run away from it!
