A Song of Restoration
“When the Lord brought back the captives to Zion, we were like men who dreamed. Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy.” (Psalm 126:1-2)
Scripture Focus: Psalm 126
As Jewish families traveled to the holy city of Jerusalem for religious celebrations, they climbed the ascending road to the temple and sang songs of praise to God. Psalm 126 is one of those songs, praising Him for restoration.
After living in exile for many years, God’s people laughed with joy as they neared Jerusalem, thankful to be home again. For years they had dreamed of their homeland, and now God had restored them to all they had been denied for so long. Now every time they went to the temple, they rejoiced at being restored to His favor.
Their joy found expression in familiar, well-loved songs of praise. The Christian’s song of restoration is about being restored, through faith in Jesus, to the God who loves us. We don’t need to travel to a holy city to worship Him because we are God’s temple. His Spirit lives within us, restoring us every day to serve and praise Him.
Insight: God restores us by salvation, but also by day after day cleaning up and restructuring our lives, filling us with joy. Our part is to yield to His work in our hearts.
