Song of a Steadfast Heart
“My heart is steadfast, O God; I will sing and make music with all my soul. . . . I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations; I will sing of you among the people.” (Psalm 108:1, 3).
Scripture Focus: Psalm 108
David praised God for His love, then asked Him to help him triumph over his enemies. The last verse of Psalm 108 shows David’s confidence in God’s answer: “With God we will gain the victory.”
David told God that his heart was “steadfast”, a word he also used in another psalm, “My heart is steadfast, O God . . . I will sing and make music” (57:7). Then when he confessed his sin, he asked God to “renew a steadfast spirit” in him (51:10).
“Steadfast” means unwavering, resolute, unyielding, deep-rooted. For most of his life, David was a steadfast follower of God. Out of that deep-rooted commitment to God David wrote the beautiful songs of praise that still bless and inspire us today.
Do you wonder how steadfast your heart is today? God brings this into your everyday living when He relates it to the way you cope with bad news that threatens your peace. “He will have no fear of bad news; his heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord” (112:7). The condition of your heart determines the strength of your song in such a time.
Insight: Spending time praising our steadfast, never-failing God will deepen the roots of our trust in Him.
