God and Birds' Nests
"Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may have her young-a place near your altar" (Psalm 84:3).
Scripture Focus: Psalm 91
What a sensitive picture: tiny birds nesting near the altar of the Lord. The actual, dynamic presence of Almighty God felt comfortably safe to little birds! The contrast between God's might and their frailty is immeasurable. Yet they fearlessly and boldly trusted Him enough to build near His presence. He is a refuge to the vulnerable!
Sadly, God's own beloved children often shrink from Him in distrust and anger. Bitterly wounded by sorrow, fear, disappointment and anger, we lay blame at His door and run. We have projected our own brokenness onto God and imputed a veil of darkness over Him. It is His fervent desire that we respond to Him in our hearts just as the little birds did: by nestling into His presence, building our soul's home there and finding safety in the shadow of the Almighty. He is the only refuge we have. He is home, our soul's only comfort. We will find joy when we trust God beyond what we can see and understand and like these little birds, fearlessly build our lives close to Him. Then, sanctuary!
Insight: Take joy! Release the places in your heart where you have longed to shelter in God, but have been too distrustful. You need Him.
