God and Creation's Curse
"The creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation will be liberated from its bondage..." (Romans 8:20-21).
Scripture Focus: 2 Peter 3:6-15
A television documentary showed the parallel lives of orca whales and sea lions. It was breath-taking. But wonder soon changed into horror as their lives intersected. Orcas are natural predators of sea lions, especially the pups. We watched the whales toying with the pitiful, agonizingly terrified babies. The menacing whales taunted and abused them for sport a long time before the final kill. It was dreadful to view. The narrator said there is no explanation for this kind of horrific behavior.
But we have the explanation. Creation is trapped under the curse of wanton destruction and death that will not break until we are free of it ourselves. Jesus, our hero, was sent to break that curse-and He did! But the time for happy endings is still ahead (Revelation 22:3). There are many that need rescuing still. For now, creation must wait with us, eagerly hoping for that new heaven and earth when we all are free. It is reassuring that "our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us" (Romans 8:18).
Insight: Like a mother after the pain of childbirth, all distortion and suffering will be swallowed in the joy and pleasure of brand new life!
