God and Trees
"The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon; planted in the house of the Lord, they will flourish...They will still bear fruit in old age..." (Psalm 92:12-14).
Scripture Focus: Psalm 92:10-15
The ancients highly revered the date palm tree for its beauty, usefulness, sweet fruit and longevity. We can see why some in Israel even named their beautiful daughters "Tamar," meaning palm tree: the palm offered exotic beauty and respite from the sun; every part of the tree could be utilized; the fruit was delectable and long-lasting; the trees could live for over 150 years! The ancient world also prized the cedars of Lebanon for their wood, which was very thick, incredibly strong, and wonderfully fragrant. Cedar was the choice for temples, public buildings and palaces.
This brings to life the rich wording of the passage, "The righteous will flourish like a palm tree and grow like a cedar of Lebanon." What more could anyone want than to be beautiful, useful, fruitful, fragrant and have longevity and strength? By faith we have been transplanted into God's house where we can flourish. Under His careful ministration we can expect to be fruitful, vital and green all our lives, even into our old age.
Insight: Look for God's blessings in your life by identifying the places where you are walking in beauty, being useful, fruitful or finding strength.
