The Original Promise Keeper

"Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath." Hebrews 6:17

Scripture Focus: Genesis 15

"I will," is the answer to small requests from my wife like, "Can you take out the trash before you go to work tomorrow?" But it is also the answer to much larger questions like, "Will you keep your word" and "Will you love me?" People enter into these kinds of commitments to each other all the time, often saying: "I will" without considering the weight of the promise. And many of us do this believing that we can actually keep our word.

At the foundation of marriage is a promise to love and serve one another. Amazingly, God enters into a relationship with us also, making promises to us through His eternal Word. In Genesis 15, God made an oath to Abraham and his descendants forever. In a dark and awesome scene, God vows to destroy Himself before breaking His promise. The fulfillment of this came centuries later at the dark judgment on the cross. "For no matter how many promises God has made, they are 'Yes' in Christ. And so through him the 'Amen' is spoken by us to the glory of God" (2 Corinthians 1:20).

Insight: Our Lord is the great promise keeper. man can break his word, but God's word is sure and trustworthy forever
