Following and Leading
“Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering.” (Ephesians 5:1-2)
Scripture Focus: Ephesians 5:1-15
The children ran across the lawn, each of them following the leader. Every turn she made, they made. They took exactly the same steps she did. When she turned and ordered them to stop, they immediately halted.
David, Israel’s greatest king, was a man after God’s own heart. He showed his people in word and deed how much he loved God. He wanted to lead his people in the right direction, to serve the one true God. Though he made many mistakes, he pleased God.
Ahab, another Bible king, was David’s opposite. He was cruel and hateful, caring only for himself. Many people went astray as they followed his example.
David led people to God with love; Ahab turned them away from God with hatred. There are always people watching us. Many of them may form their ideas of God’s character by what they see in our lives. May we be constantly mindful of following Him so that we are never responsible for leading people astray.
Insight: Our words and actions have great power to influence others. Let’s make sure our influence leads them toward Christ, not away from Him.
