Reaching for Perfection
“When this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins...By one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.” (Hebrews 10:11, 14)
Scripture Focus: Hebrews 10:11-18
Barry paints cars for a living. He works hard on each paint job until it’s almost perfect. He can’t bear to have any imperfections, but that’s just not possible.
Only God’s work is perfect, but He plans for us to reach for perfection. God loves us, imperfect as we are. He didn’t wait for us to be perfect before He made us His own. But, as Max Lucado says, “God loves me just the way I am. But He refuses to leave me that way.”
Day by day our Lord is perfecting us, through His Word and the work of the Holy Spirit in our hearts. Sure, we still make mistakes, but Jesus, the perfect sacrifice has provided for our cleansing and forgiveness.
By Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross He has “made perfect” those who have put their trust in Him. Amazingly, God sees us as holy because of Jesus. And someday in heaven we’ll be perfect in every way.
In the meantime? Let’s yield to His desires for us. Let’s cooperate with His work in our hearts to conform us into the image of His Son.
Insight: We’re flawed, imperfect humans, but Jesus is our perfect Savior. Only He can create perfection in our hearts and lives.
