Black Clouds
“Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress. He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed.” (Psalm 107:28-29)
Scripture Focus: Psalm 107:4-32
Severe thunderstorms surrounded us as we drove toward home. We hoped to get there before the storms caught us, but suddenly we saw a huge ominous cloud bearing down on us. We pulled off the road as the wind and rain hit our van, making it sway. Hailstones hit the windows so hard we feared they would break. Cautiously driving towards home, we kept watching those menacing clouds.
Do we find ourselves fearfully scanning the sky for the black clouds in our lives: unfaithfulness, unhappiness, criticism, job loss, worries over health and money. Maybe we even worry sometimes about whether or not anyone loves us. We create our own hail and thunder in our insecurities. We need Jesus, our Master Teacher to teach us how to get past those terrifying black clouds.Jesus has already calmed most of those storm clouds before they even reach us. And when He doesn’t, He promises to guide us through them. Whenever we’re frightened by troubling things, we can cry out, depending on Him to still the storm.
Insight: God understands the real and imagined storms we face. He will bring us out of our distress when we turn to Him in faith.

+DEV+ Praising God

Praising God
“David...danced before the Lord with all his might, while he and the entire house of Israel brought up the ark of the Lord with shouts and the sound of trumpets.” (2 Samuel 6:14-15)
Scripture Focus: 2 Samuel 6:16-22
David danced joyfully before the Lord when they brought the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem. He wasn’t shy about it either; he did it in front of all the people, and God was pleased. His wife Michael was embarrassed by his exuberant display, but David said, “I danced for the Lord. I will celebrate before Him” (see 2 Samuel 6:21-22). His focus was on the Lord.
We have many ways of praising God, but the important thing is that God receives the expression from our hearts. His Word encourages us to praise Him in many ways: alone, in the assembly of believers, before unbelievers, with singing, with musical instruments, in the morning, at night.
But the prophet Isaiah recorded a very sad message and warning. While Israel kept their schedule of festivals and appointed feasts, they brought offerings and sacrifices and celebrated, assuming they were pleasing Him. But God was not pleased. What He was looking for in their joyful celebration was lives that matched their praises.
Insight: Praising God brings us closer to Him and reflects our love for Him. He values praise from our hearts that are in sync with our obedience to Him.

Watching Over Us
“The Lord watches over you—the Lord is your shade at your right hand....The Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.” (Psalm 121:5, 8)
Scripture Focus: Psalm 121:3-8
Several years ago while grabbing the trash, I headed out to work. As I stepped through the door, my foot caught on the metal threshold. In slow motion I felt myself twist and fly out the door. Two seconds later, I was lying flat on the cold, hard ground.
My ankle hurt, but I needed to get to work. Grumbling, I hobbled around picking up the scattered garbage. A few hours later my ankle had grown to twice its size. My boss sent me to the doctor. After getting my sprained ankle treated, I went home and sat with my foot propped up. My mind was filled with complaints.
Suddenly, I realized how fortunate I had been. I hadn’t broken anything; it was just a sprain. I had forgotten to be thankful for God’s protection.
God’s love for us guarantees His constant watchfulness and care. He is always on duty, whether we’re awake or sleeping. He’s there for us. Even when we face serious trials, we can be sure that God has allowed them in love—for our good and for His glory.
Insight: God does not keep us from having trouble, but He does promise to be with us. “Your consolation brought joy to my soul” (Psalm 94:19).

“Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name: make known among the nations what he has done....Remember the wonders he has done.” (1 Chronicles 16:8, 12)
Scripture Focus: Psalm 77:11-15
A couple of ladies were talking at an auction I attended. “It just isn’t right for those children to lay out all their mother’s precious things for others to see. Why, she traveled all over the world collecting these lovely things. Now the objects she held dear are being pawed over by strangers.”
At first I agreed with the ladies. However, watching the bright smiles on people’s faces enlightened me. It was evident that these objects brought many happy memories. One person remarked, “It’s something to remember her by.”
My wife has a porcelain doll that was her grandmother’s. When I look at it I remember her kindness and her Missouri hospitality. It’s good to have certain things that remind us of fond memories.
When we look at the wonders of nature we are reminded of God’s love of beauty, His power and faithfulness. When we see verses we have underlined in our Bibles we remember how God has kept His promises, guided us, and given us comfort when we needed it.
Insight: Each of us has different things that make us think of God. Let’s share them with others, especially those who don’t know Him.

Growing Through Rest
“The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon; planted in the house of the Lord, they will flourish in the courts of our God.” (Psalm 92:12-13)
Scripture Focus: Psalm 92:12-15
Winter arrives in the Midwest and changes our world. Along roadways and in our yards and gardens, dead grass, plants, and bushes appear lifeless, fallen over against the hard earth. It seems sad after they have fought so hard to survive. But are the plants really dead? Their roots are still firmly planted in the soil. They are merely resting through the winter, dormant, waiting for the spring sun to bring them back to life.
Sometimes my life feels dormant as I sit on the sidelines watching other people with their accomplishments. Then I read God’s Word and find new strength and purpose. I take time to pray for people and feel compassion for them. I reach out, listening to their heartaches and sympathizing with them.
Many of us have times when life seems to be on hold. Our Master Teacher is teaching us to rest and learn from Him. When we put other things aside and focus on listening to Him and serving others, we learn to become stronger and more caring Christians.
Insight: Flourish by taking time in God’s Word and give thanks for quiet times that prepare our hearts and help us grow.

+DEV+ A Lesson about Trials

A Lesson about Trials
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.” (James 1:2-3)
Scripture Focus: James 1:2-12
In front of her Sunday School class, Katie announced that she would pray for patience. A snicker came from the back of the room. Katie glanced towards the sound. “Is there something wrong with my choice?” she asked, feeling embarrassed.
“Well, no,”
“So why did you laugh?” she replied.
“Because, Katie, what you are really asking for are trials and troubles. Are you sure you want that?” said a friend.
James wrote that if we want to learn to be patient and wise, God will give us lessons by allowing trials in our lives. Why? If we cooperate with our teacher, difficult things teach us how to develop patience and wisdom. They’re like tools God uses to sculpt us into stronger Christians.
That’s why James tells us to actually consider it joy when we face trials. During times of difficulty, we pray more and depend on God’s help and strength. We experience a closer relationship with Him. And that’s pure joy!
Insight: When things are easy we aren’t as likely to reach out to God. The harder things get, the more we grow as we learn to lean on Him.

Our Choice
“If serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve....But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 2415)
Scripture Focus: Deuteronomy 30:15-20
My friend died this year. Many tears were shed at his death, but they were partly tears of joy. Rick has gone home. He will be remembered for his funny stories about everyday things. He brought us much laughter, but he was serious about his love for his Savior.
Jesus has gone to Heaven to prepare a place for God’s children. One day He will come again to take us home. He doesn’t want to leave anyone behind; His desire is that we would all come home. God loved the world and sent His Son to make the way for all to become His children.
Though the invitation to Heaven is open to everyone, some will not accept. God asks that we receive His Son Jesus as Savior, trusting Him to forgive our sins. Some people say a truly loving God would never exclude anyone from eternity with Him. They don’t understand that it’s people who make that choice. God reaches out to us. It is our choice to accept or reject His Son. It is the most important choice anyone could ever make.
Insight: God never forces anyone into Heaven. He simply reveals the way to get there, then issues an invitation. Why would anyone refuse?

The Path to Freedom
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9)
Scripture Focus: Ephesians 2:1-10
Three-year-old Grange was born in Kiev and lived in an orphanage. Then a kind couple from the United States adopted him. Grange doesn’t realize it yet, but he has been given a wonderful gift. Living on a farm with his new sister and two parents who love him, Grange will have many more opportunities and freedom. His new parents have offered him a whole new life.
That’s a small picture of what Jesus has done for us. He doesn’t offer us money, houses, boats, or cars. It doesn’t matter whether we live in a mansion, on a farm, or on the street. True happiness can be found only when we ask for His forgiveness.
Jesus paid with His life for our forgiveness. We did nothing to deserve it, and because He loves us He offers it to us freely. By His grace we can have freedom from sin, eternal life, and a prepared place in Heaven. And it doesn’t cost us a thing. Christ already paid the price for all of us. All we have to do, like Grange, is accept what is offered. When we receive Jesus into our hearts, we’re on the path of freedom.
Insight: Only God would offer something that cost so much for free! You can’t buy it or earn it. Salvation is a free gift.

Don’t Worry
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” (Philippians 4:6)
Scripture Focus: Psalm 145:9-19
I was out of work. Since business had declined, we had to curb our expenses my company had no work. My part-time work didn’t bring enough income. We scraped by with a few groceries here and there, but then the light bill came due. We just didn’t have the money. What could we do? I prayed and prayed, but it seemed hopeless. If our power were shut off, with our children it would be very hard.
A couple of days later I reached my hand into our mailbox and pulled out an envelope with a check in it. It wasn’t just an ordinary check but one for the exact amount of our light bill. Included was a note from a relative saying he had felt compelled to send us some money.
When I thought God was inattentive, He was actually directing someone to send us exactly what we needed. I have seen God move mountains time after time, evidence of the love He lavishes on His children. The old Gospel song is right: Why worry when you can pray?
Insight: God teaches us not to fret or worry, but to place all our concerns in His trustworthy hands. They couldn’t be in a better place.

Loneliness
“I call on you, O God, for you will answer me; give ear to me and hear my prayer....Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings.” (Psalm 17:6, 8)
Scripture Focus: Ecclesiastes 4:8-12
It was late fall and there was a chill in the air. On a wire sat a lone bird while down the road flew a flock of birds heading south. Had he at some point been part of that flock? Watching him, anyone could tell he needed to find a warmer climate. Maybe he was just too tired or sick. Maybe the journey was too much for him. Either way, he was alone.
Life can be a long journey if no one’s there for us, especially during hard times. I’m pretty sure even King David felt alone at times, like when he was running from King Saul, who was determined to kill him (see 1 Samuel 23).
Jesus was alone in the Garden of Gethsemane before His arrest. His best friends fell asleep when He obviously wanted them to keep watch with Him (Matthew 26:36-46).
But are we ever truly alone? God is with us every second, 24-7. Even a whisper reaches His ears. We can talk to Him about our longings and loneliness. His power and love fill lonely hearts. God walks beside us every step of the way.
Insight: When we feel alone we can always reach out to God. He will open our eyes and hearts to His loving presence.

Heeding Warnings
“The ordinances of the Lord are sure and altogether righteous. They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold....By them is your servant warned.” (Psalm 19:9-11)
Scripture Focus: Psalm 19:7-14
The warning on the prescription bottle read, “Do not operate machinery while taking this medication.” Disregarding the message, the patient put her children in the car and headed for town. Everything was fine until she stopped at a busy intersection. She checked the traffic, then pulled out. Her son screamed—a car was coming straight at them. The driver of that car managed to swerve into another lane. No one was hurt, but the woman was foolish to ignore the medicine’s warning.
Failing to heed warnings can lead to tragedy. Out of His love, God may place barriers directly in our path. Sometimes we ignore them or step over them. The Israelites didn’t always listen to God’s warnings or heed them. This caused suffering and tragic consequences. God gave them leaders to guide them and His own presence, but they foolishly disregarded His instruction.
How different their history would have been if they had thanked God for His faithful warnings and asked Him to give them the good sense to heed them.
Insight: When we’re tempted to ignore God’s warning, we need to remember that He is the One in charge, and He knows what He’s doing.

Turning Around
“To those in Damascus...Jerusalem...Judea, and to the Gentiles also, I preached that they should repent and turn to God and prove their repentance by their deeds.” (Acts 26:20)
Scripture Focus: Psalm 51:1-13
A three-year-old was playing in her battery-powered jeep, driving up and down the driveway and out into the sidewalk. Her father looked out when he heard no noise, and he saw her turning the corner down the street two blocks away. Alarmed, he ran swiftly after her. Catching her, he eyed her sternly and asked, “What are you supposed to do at the corner?”
She grimaced. “I’m supposed to turn around.”
“Well,” her exasperated father asked, “Why didn’t you?”
She replied, “Oh, I don’t know; I just didn’t.”
How often have we left God’s path, turned the corner, ignored His advice, and suffered the consequences. If God asked us why, we would have to say, “I don’t really know why.” But the truth is we chose to go our own way.
It’s easy to walk away from God, one step at a time, and once we turn away, it’s easy to just keep going. But if we truly repent and turn around, God will forgive us and get us back on the right path.
Insight: True repentance is turning away from our sin and going in the opposite direction, toward God and His forgiveness.

Learning Persistence
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.” (James 1:2-3)
Scripture Focus: Jeremiah 38:6-13
Some ants built their hills on a sidewalk. In each hill were many grains of sand carried by those tiny ants from a sand pile a block away. People walking on the sidewalk stepped on the anthills and smashed them. Day after day the persistent ants brought more sand and rebuilt the hills.
God’s people were persistent—in walking their own paths. Prophets, such as Jeremiah, gave them God’s instruction. He spoke to the stubborn Israelites, “Return to the Lord. Confess your sins and seek His forgiveness. He will have mercy on you” (see Jeremiah 3:12). Sometimes they laughed at him. Other times they just turned away. Finally they put Jeremiah in prison. He was discouraged, but refused to give up. He believed God, even if the Israelites didn’t. And God took care of Jeremiah, even when he was trapped in a cistern.
God asks us to trust Him, even when things don’t turn out the way we want. He will give us the strength to persist. If we listen and obey, as Jeremiah did, God will be in charge of the results.
Insight: Don’t get tired of serving God and doing good. Persist in obeying Him, no matter what happens—or doesn’t happen.

Trusting God
Trusting God
“Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see....And without faith it is impossible to please God...he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” (Hebrews 11:1, 6)
Scripture Focus: Joshua 2:1-18; 6:25
Rahab must have been scared when she hid and then helped the Israelite spies escape Jericho. If she had been caught, she would have been punished for being a traitor.
Later, when she hung a scarlet cord from her window, did she wonder if her rescuers would really come? Did she wait patiently or pace the floor? She had heard of the God leading the Israelites. Though she didn’t know Him, she believed He protected and cared for His people. She felt she could trust Him to do the same for her.
To wait patiently on God is difficult. Sometimes it’s easier to rely on ourselves. We want to trust Him, but we feel like the man who asked for his son to be healed. He said to Jesus, “I do believe. Help me overcome my unbelief” (Mark 9:24).
If you believe in your heart but your head says it’s impossible, you need to listen to your heart, not your head. Jesus has proved Himself to be trustworthy over and over again. You have no reason to doubt Him and every reason to trust Him.
Insight: Instead of trying to figure things out before trusting God, talk to Him and leave your doubts in His hands. He will not fail you.
