Loneliness

“I call on you, O God, for you will answer me; give ear to me and hear my prayer....Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings.” (Psalm 17:6, 8)
Scripture Focus: Ecclesiastes 4:8-12

It was late fall and there was a chill in the air. On a wire sat a lone bird while down the road flew a flock of birds heading south. Had he at some point been part of that flock? Watching him, anyone could tell he needed to find a warmer climate. Maybe he was just too tired or sick. Maybe the journey was too much for him. Either way, he was alone.

Life can be a long journey if no one’s there for us, especially during hard times. I’m pretty sure even King David felt alone at times, like when he was running from King Saul, who was determined to kill him (see 1 Samuel 23).

Jesus was alone in the Garden of Gethsemane before His arrest. His best friends fell asleep when He obviously wanted them to keep watch with Him (Matthew 26:36-46).

But are we ever truly alone? God is with us every second, 24-7. Even a whisper reaches His ears. We can talk to Him about our longings and loneliness. His power and love fill lonely hearts. God walks beside us every step of the way.

Insight: When we feel alone we can always reach out to God. He will open our eyes and hearts to His loving presence.
