Heeding Warnings

“The ordinances of the Lord are sure and altogether righteous. They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold....By them is your servant warned.” (Psalm 19:9-11)
Scripture Focus: Psalm 19:7-14

The warning on the prescription bottle read, “Do not operate machinery while taking this medication.” Disregarding the message, the patient put her children in the car and headed for town. Everything was fine until she stopped at a busy intersection. She checked the traffic, then pulled out. Her son screamed—a car was coming straight at them. The driver of that car managed to swerve into another lane. No one was hurt, but the woman was foolish to ignore the medicine’s warning.

Failing to heed warnings can lead to tragedy. Out of His love, God may place barriers directly in our path. Sometimes we ignore them or step over them. The Israelites didn’t always listen to God’s warnings or heed them. This caused suffering and tragic consequences. God gave them leaders to guide them and His own presence, but they foolishly disregarded His instruction.

How different their history would have been if they had thanked God for His faithful warnings and asked Him to give them the good sense to heed them.

Insight: When we’re tempted to ignore God’s warning, we need to remember that He is the One in charge, and He knows what He’s doing.
