Serve The Living God
"How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!" (Hebrews 9:14)
Scripture Focus: Hebrews 9:11-15
I wonder if there is anyone who still remembers an old radio program called The Shadow. It was one of my favorites as a boy. Lamont Cranston would say with each broadcast, "Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows." I love the old time radio shows.
I don't know how extensive the Shadow's knowledge really was, but I am certain of the One who truly knows our hearts (1 Samuel 16:7), the One in whose wings' shadow we are safely hidden (Psalm 17:8).
Not only does He know our hearts, but He has cleansed them (Hebrews 10:22). The author of Hebrews contrasts the Old Testament sacrifices with the precious blood of Jesus, concluding, "How much more, then, will the blood of Christ... cleanse our consciences" (9:14).
Can you see that the animal sacrifices of that day were but shadows of a greater cleansing yet to come? Though the Israelite people were washed of their sin through the shedding of animal blood, there was no cleansing of the heart - only the blood of Jesus could do that. And it has!
Insight: "Help me, lord, to appreciate all that you have done for me in Christ."

+DEV+ God’s Family

Topic: +DEV+ God’s Family
God’s Family
"Both the one who makes men holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers." (Hebrews 2:11)
Scripture Focus: Hebrews 2:10-18
The heart of this verse strikes me as incredible: Jesus and I are members of the same family. Amazing! How does one enter the family of God?
The Bible teaches that we enter God's family much the same way we enter human families: by birth or adoption. We have been born again, as Jesus explained to Nicodemus in John 3. And we have been adopted as His sons through Jesus Christ (Ephesians 1:5). We've doubly entered His family so that He knows us and cares for us as His very own children, His flesh and blood. What a wonder to be a part of the family of the God of the Universe!
Spiritual new birth happens when we receive Jesus as our Savior. It is something so profound that the greatest theologians have studied and pondered it for centuries. Yet it is so simple that even a child can come to Him. Many years ago, I was born into the family of God the same way you can be: by acknowledging I am a sinner, believing Jesus died to pay the penalty for my sins, and calling out to Him as my Lord and Father.
Insight: "Father, thank you for giving me new birth, adopting me as your own, and welcoming me into your family with open arms."

+DEV+ We Belong To God

Topic: +DEV+ We Belong To God
We Belong To God
"If a man cleanses himself from the latter, he will be an instrument for noble purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work." (2 Timothy 2:21)
Scripture Focus: 2 Peter 3:8-9
Experts tell us that the proverbial "snail's pace" is actually about 23 inches per hour. Sometimes I feel that my sanctification is proceeding at about that rate. Often there is so little apparent progress that I'm tempted to give up altogether.
Then I come to my senses and remember that I cannot give up; I don't even have the right to do that! Since I no longer belong to myself but to Christ, only He has the right to tell me to give up and quit. Yet I can't imagine He would ever do that! The Greek word "Master" (vs. 21b) has its roots in the word we know as despot, or absolute ruler. But the Master of your heart and mine is not an oppressor or tyrant. He is good.
This aspect of holiness - belonging to God and being set apart for His service - helps me get things in perspective. I want to be useful for my Master; I want to live my life in light of eternity. And I know that He will use me, by His grace, to accomplish His will...even if it seems to me to be taking a very long time to get there.
Insight: "Lord, help me remember whose I am and to rest in you and the assurance that you are at work in my life."

+DEV+ God Wants Us To Be Holy

God Wants Us To Be Holy
"May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May... [you] be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it." (1 Thessalonians 5:23-24)
Scripture Focus: 1 Thessalonians 5:16-24
Someone once said, "God is easy to please but hard to satisfy." Does that resonate with you? Let me explain it this way. Suppose you had a 10-month old child who was ready to take her first steps. You would be pleased and excited when she did so. But would you be satisfied if she never learned to walk better than that?
Like a loving father, God is pleased with our first feeble steps in our Christian walk. But He is not satisfied with that. He wants us to grow and mature so that our walk with Him progresses throughout our journey as believers. God intends to make us holy "through and through." He wants us to be holy and will settle for nothing less. And lest you feel discouraged about that, remember that verse 24 tells us He will do it! God does not leave us on our own to grow up any more than a parent would leave a child to her own. He is with us all the way. "He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus" (Philippians 1:6).
Insight: "Father, I thank you that sanctification is your work. Help me be receptive to it."

+DEV+ The Provision Of God
Date: January 27, 2014 2:47 AM

The Provision Of God
"God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit." (1 Thessalonians 4:7-8)
Scripture Focus: 1 Thessalonians 4:1-11
Holy living for us is not automatic, as we are painfully aware. Though we share God's nature (2 Peter 1:4), we still need at least two other things: knowledge and power. Paul mentions both in today's Scripture verses: knowledge comes through instruction from God's Word, and power comes from the indwelling Holy Spirit.
The primary way God speaks to and instructs us is through the Bible. Prayer and Bible reading are like the two sides of a personal conversation. We speak to God in prayer; He speaks to us in His Word.
Most of us know more of God's Word than we are obeying. What we need is Someone to give us the desire and ability to obey it. The Lord meets us here in the Person of His Holy Spirit. "It is God who works in you to will and to act according to His good purpose" (Philippians 2:13). All that we need for holy living has been given us, so we ought to be without excuse. Yet we still fail day after day. That is why He gave us Jesus, the provision of perfect holiness when our efforts fall short.
Insight: "Lord, help me live today in obedience to your word and dependence on your Holy Spirit."

+DEV+ Holiness Is God's Will

Holiness Is God's Will
"It is God's will for you that you should be holy, ...that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable..." (1 Thessalonians 4:3-5)
Scripture Focus: Psalm 143:8-10
Do you wonder what God's will is for your life? Most of us have struggled through knowing God's will in particular situations we've faced - issues of vocation, marriage, finances, etc. The concerns of life can weigh us down. But these are not our most basic concern. God cares deeply about who is on the throne of our hearts and about the character of our being. The Bible says His will for me is that I be holy.
If you were to look at my employment record, you'd think I can't hold a job. Since my college days I have been a truck driver, a pastor of three churches, a bookstore clerk, sales manager, editor, free-lance writer, and high school teacher. God has led me on to live in four different states. Perhaps some of you have had lives with much change like this, too.
I am thankful to God that He is interested in such matters of my life as where I live and work. But I know His primary concern for me in all circumstances is that I belong to Him. Belonging to Him, I am holy. Let's be holy as is His will for us!
Insight: "Father, help me do your will wholeheartedly."

Garments Of Love
"Therefore as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience." (Colossians 3:12)
Scripture Focus: Romans 13:11-14
The Old Testament priests were attired in special garments that set them apart from the rest of the people. Those garments, described in Exodus 28, were designed to reflect God's holiness and remind the people of their unique relationship to Him.
When Paul spoke to his friends in Colosse and Rome of putting on garments appropriate to holiness, the picture of the priestly garments probably came to mind. But they were not to be worn for show. It is quite the opposite! Putting on kindness, patience - indeed, putting on Jesus Christ Himself - is bound to be noticed and perhaps even draw others to the Lord.
Suppose you were always compassionate, humble and gentle with the members of your family. Would they notice (or worry) that you were sick? Suppose you put on the love of Jesus every day with the people you work with and meet. What kind of impression would that leave?
Through our holy God who owns us, our lives reflect His character. Praise Him for clothing us with His righteousness.
Insight: "Father, please clothe me with Jesus and his Holiness so that i might more effectively share the gospel with others."

Washed Through The Word
"...to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the Word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless." (Ephesians 5:26-27)
Scripture Focus: Psalm 51:1-10
If you were to meet with an important person, you'd want to look your best, with your clothes cleaned and pressed. Paul expresses a similar idea in today's verses when he refers to the church as being presented to the Lord "without stain or wrinkle," that is, washed and ironed. This washing is accomplished through the Word of God.
Do you struggle with retaining what you read in the Bible? Perhaps your like the little boy whose father handed him a dirty wicker basket and instructed him to go to the river and bring back water in the basket. The boy obeyed, but all the water drained out. He was sent a second time-with the same results. By the third time the boy grew frustrated. But his father inspected the basket and was satisfied. He'd simply wanted the basket cleansed, and the water running though it had accomplished that.
Study God's Word. Even when you do not retain it all, a cleansing comes over your life and you will find yourself declared radiant - washed and ironed - before God because of Jesus.
Insight: "Let the cleansing blood of Jesus wash over me, Lord, so that even in my failures i am spotless and holy before you."

+DEV+ A Holy Temple

A Holy Temple
"In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit." (Ephesians 2:21-22)
Scripture Focus: 1 Corinthians 6:18-20
Can you picture God wearing a construction worker's hard hat? Does that seem out of place? Yet it's not an inappropriate image. After all, God is engaged in a building project, fashioning all of us into His Holy Temple where He dwells in us through His Spirit. He is both the General Contractor and the Tenant!
The more familiar image, of course, is that of the temple in the Old Testament. It was the place where God's presence dwelt with His people, a picture of how things would one day be when the ultimate temple sacrifice would be made in Jesus. Then the curtain would be torn and Christ would take up residence in each of us. We would be His holy temple!
In Ephesians 2 Paul speaks of more than the individual as a temple. The whole church is the temple of the Lord; believers are the "living stones" being shaped, cut, and fitted into God's building. Whether the picture is of the temple as individuals or as part of the whole, it is holy, taking on the character of its chief Occupant, Jesus.
Insight: "Lord, I want to be a temple in which you dwell. Use me to be helpful in the building program of the church worldwide."

Topic: +DEV+ A Holy Temple

+DEV+ Holiness In God

Topic: +DEV+ Holiness In God
Holiness In God
"Since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God." (2 Corinthians 7:1)
Scripture Focus: 2 Corinthians 6
It's hard to admit, but I know I am not the man today I intended to be ten years ago. As I look back over my life, I recall some of my hopes and aspirations, some of the dreams I dreamed with God. A few have been realized; many have not. Most never will be now.
But I also am not the man today that I was ten years ago, and that is good! I see areas of my life in which I have grown and matured. When Paul speaks of "perfecting holiness," I realize I am a work in progress, keeping my eyes fixed on two things Paul writes of: the promises of God and reverence
for God.
Chapter 6 of 2 Corinthians tells some of those promises. God will help you (vs. 2), receive you (vs. 17), and be a father to you (vs. 18). In light of those precious promises, God calls you and me to come out and be separate, to be holy and purified. We come near to Him and stand in reverent awe of who He is. I may not be the man I want to be, but God sent His Son to be that Man in my place, Holiness perfected in a human body, all for me and you.
Insight: "Search my heart, lord, and reveal to me any sins i have overlooked. wash them away through the power of Jesus' blood."

+DEV+ Family Members Influence Each Other
Date: January 15, 2014 10:55 PM
Topic: +DEV+ Family Members Influence Each Other
Family Members Influence Each Other
"The unbelieving husband has been sanctified through his wife, and the unbelieving wife has been sanctified through her believing husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean but as it is, they are holy." (1 Corinthians 7:14)
Scripture Focus: Matthew 5:14-16
This is a difficult verse to understand, and I do not claim to fully grasp it myself. But one thing is clear: a family member who is a Christian has an opportunity to influence others in the home.
How is it that an unbelieving spouse has been sanctified through the believing spouse? And how is it that the children are holy? Paul says this is so, and I am left to conclude that the home is a powerful place for influencing people for God. Peter spoke of it also in 1 Peter 3:1-2 about the believing wife winning over the unbelieving husband through the behavior, purity and reverence in her life.
If this is true of a home where only one member is a Christian, how much more when both partners are believing? What an impact they have on the lives of their loved ones! It makes me see my own home as God's workshop, a place where lives are tempered and shaped for eternity. My wife knows me better than anyone, so I consider what does she see in my life that would cause her to want to be more like Christ?
Insight: "Lord, help me live with those who know me best in such a way that I can influence them for eternity."

+DEV+ You Are Not What You Were
Date: January 13, 2014 11:15 PM
Topic: +DEV+ You Are Not What You Were
You Are Not What You Were
"That is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God." (1 Corinthians 6:11)
Scripture Focus: 1 Peter 2:9-12
What a powerful argument for personal holiness summed up in these words: "You are not the person you once were; so do not live as you once lived." That is essentially what Paul is saying.
In the preceding verses Paul describes the lifestyle of the ungodly and then adds this profound reminder: "That is what some of you were." Looking back on how much we have been forgiven is simply staggering. Knowing what we were makes us immensely thankful for what we now are.
And praise God for the next little word in the passage - one of the most important in Scripture - the word "but." That is what you once were, but... something has happened to change you. Paul says you were washed (your sins no longer mark you), sanctified (made holy) and justified (declared blameless). This radical change surpasses any kind of cleaning we ourselves could accomplish. Christ has made us what we are!
That radical change took place in my life when I received Christ as my Savior. I am not the person I once was, and I thank Him for it.
Insight: "Lord, help me when I slip back into my old style of living. Help me know the enormous difference you've made in my life."

+DEV+ Called To Be Holy

Called To Be Holy
"To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be holy, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ - their Lord and ours..." (1 Corinthians 1:2)
Scripture Focus: Matthew 5:1-6
In his book The Pursuit of Holiness, Jerry Bridges calls attention to this verse and writes, "We are through Christ made holy (sanctified) in our standing before God, and called to be holy in our daily lives." He asks readers to survey themselves and see if there is a yearning in their hearts to live a life pleasing to God. The desire for holiness may not consciously be present at the time we come to Christ, but the Holy Spirit will help that desire grow in us. The more we see Jesus and His holiness, the more we long to be like Him.
I find those thoughts to be challenging. How glad I am to know that I do have a hunger for holiness in my heart! But I am happier still to know that my Savior has lived the holy life for me that even the deepest longings of my heart could not produce. I may try and try to reach the level of purity He has called me to; most likely I will fail and fail. But I can rest in the fact that, as Paul says, I have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, not in myself!
Insight: "Father thank you for placing within me a genuine hunger for Holiness. May my life be pleasing to you in every respect."

Sanctified By The Truth
"Now I commit you to God and to the word of his grace, which can build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified." (Acts 20:32)
Scripture Focus: Hebrews 4:12-13
Some time ago my wife and I set out to read through the Bible in one year. She was more faithful than I, completing the reading while I dropped out halfway through. But we both benefited from our reading and grew in our understanding and appreciation of God's character, His loving plan of redemption, and His instructions for living a holy life.
It is the reading of God's Word that sanctifies us and sinks down into our hearts. The Holy Spirit does His work of changing us to be more like Christ. Even though that year I didn't reach my "through-the-Bible" goal, I became more aware of my need to read the precious book that God Himself inspired and gave us. M.R. De Haan once said, "If the believer would spend half as much time in the Word, worship and prayer as he does in his social activities, he would set the world on fire."
May the Word of God set our hearts on fire; may it purify and refine us like gold. Jesus said, "I have given them your word... Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth (John 17:14, 17).
Insight: "We praise you, Father, for your word which you have made readily available to us. Thank you for the living word that you sent to us."

+DEV+ Now This Is Eternal Life
Date: January 7, 2014 8:29 PM
Topic: +DEV+ Now This Is Eternal Life
Now This Is Eternal Life
"Now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life." (Romans 6:22)
Scripture Focus: 1 John 5:11-20
You may think of eternal life as unending existence. It is, indeed, everlasting. But actually, it is more than that! Even those who are not saved will have an unending existence - in hell. Eternal life is a new quality of life altogether. It is God's life in us. Through faith in Jesus Christ, we have become partakers of the divine nature (2 Peter 1:4) and have received the Holy Spirit in us (Galatians 3:2).
Jesus defined eternal life this way: "Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent" (John 17:3). "Knowing" is more than having head knowledge. It is entering into a living relationship with Him. As we draw nearer to the next life, our new life no longer holds us hostage to sin. Are we exempt from sin? Not yet. Do we still stumble and fall? Yes. But we are already on our way to holiness, casting away our old life and its bondage to sin. We are growing in holiness that leads to Christ-likeness, and the result is eternal life.
Insight: "Thank you for the new life I have in Christ and for the eternal life with him that awaits me."

+DEV+ A Handel For Holiness
Date: January 6, 2014 11:57 PM
Topic: +DEV+ A Handel For Holiness
A Handel For Holiness
"Don't you know that...you are slaves to the one whom you obey - whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?" (Romans 6:16)
Scripture Focus: Romans 6:15-23
I can almost hear you saying, "I want to be holy; I've tried time and again, but I just can't seem to get a handle on it."
I have good news for you. I've found the "handle" for holiness. It's expressed simply in today's Bible verses: Obedience leads to righteousness, which leads to holiness (see vs. 16, 19). Obedience is the "handle" we need to take hold of.
One pastor points out that righteousness refers mainly to our actions while holiness speaks of our inner state or condition. "To be holy means to be pure within, to be pure in heart, to be pure in life, to be dedicated to God, to be conformed to His divine image and character."
Before we have Jesus on the throne of our lives, Paul says our sinful actions lead to "ever-increasing wickedness." But when we are living for Christ, our righteous actions lead to ever-increasing holiness. As we obey, our character will be strengthened in holiness. Even when we lose our "handle" on holiness, our perfect Redeemer has His hold on us.
Insight: "Lord, help me desire to obey, and then help me to do it by the power of your Holy Spirit."

+DEV+ God Has Chosen You
Date: January 5, 2014 11:44 PM
Topic: +DEV+ God Has Chosen You
God Has Chosen You
"You are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession." (Deuteronomy 7:6)
Scripture Focus: Deuteronomy 7:6-9
Two lines of William Norman Ewer's 1917 poetry have now become famous: How odd of God, To choose the Jews. It was odd perhaps, but not out of keeping with the way God does things. In all of His dealing with us, He takes the initiative; we respond.
God's purpose in choosing the Jews was that they would be a people set apart for Him. It was not because they were numerous or noteworthy in any way before He looked upon them. He simply chose them in His wisdom and love "...before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight" (Ephesians 1:4), the same way He chooses you and me today.
Unless God had revealed Himself to us, we wouldn't even know of Him. He sent His Son to die for our sins; none other could have initiated that great salvation act, a plan which slowly unfolded throughout history and which still reaches into hearts today. Have you accepted salvation through Jesus? He is making you into His likeness, a process that will take your lifetime. But all the while, you will belong to Him.
Insight: "Lord, thank you for saving me. Please work in my life to accomplish your purposes."

+DEV+ Be Holy
Date: January 3, 2014 12:27 AM
Topic: +DEV+ Be Holy
Be Holy
"But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: 'Be holy, because I am holy.'" (1 Peter 1:15-16)
Scripture Focus: 1 Peter 1:13-21
The older I get, the more I recognize ways in which I am like my father, especially in mannerisms or gestures, vocal inflections or the use of family phrases. I look in the mirror and see my dad. I guess "Like father, like son" can be true after all!
Peter says it should also be true in relation to us and our heavenly Father. If the holy God is our Father - and He is if we've received Jesus as our Savior - then our lives should reflect that family resemblance, too...even in holiness.
In our passage today, Peter quotes from the Old Testament book of Leviticus, a book which has a lot to say about holiness. After God brought the Israelites out of Egypt, He called them to consecrate themselves, to be holy. He urges Christians to think much the same way. As God's children, we are to obey and bring honor to our Father. Obedience is the way we bring holiness to a practical level in our lives. The more we obey, the more we come to be like our heavenly Father. We bear the family likeness because God is holy.
Insight: "Thank you, Lord, for saving me from my old life of sin. Help me walk in obedience to you, reflecting your Holiness."

+DEV+ A King For The New Year
Date: January 2, 2014 12:04 AM
Topic: +DEV+ A King For The New Year
A King For The New Year
"Did you receive the Spirit by observing the law, or by believing what you heard? Are you so foolish? After beginning with the Spirit, are you now trying to attain your goal by human effort?" (Galatians 3:2-3)
Scripture Focus: Philippians 3:7-14
Every year at this time I am torn between making New Year's resolutions and not making them! On the one hand, it is good to review our lives and seek change for the better; on the other, I know that my resolutions usually fade come January, and this can be dispiriting. Why bother?
I have come to see that rather than set my own priorities for my life, I need to ask the King what He wants in my life. Also, I find that I need to put less faith in resolutions and more in the only One who really can be resolute. I need to depend more on the "God who works in [me] to will and to act according to his good purposes" (Philippians 2:13) rather than on my own willpower.
Instead of starting every year with a list of resolutions like last year's, ask the Lord to speak to you each day, by His Word and in prayer and in the many nudges His Spirit gives you. Listen to His voice. And let the King's proclamation of love and providence for you determine the priorities for your life. May His reign carry you through!
Insight: With the same great explosive power that raised Jesus from the dead, God can raise me afresh each day as I ask Him.
