Learning to Share

“I have received...the gifts you sent. They are a fragrant offering...And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:18-19)
Scripture Focus: Philippians 4:10-19

Larry and his wife lived next door to Ed, an elderly man, grouchy and distant. But every time Larry’s wife baked a pie or cake, she took a piece to Ed. Grudgingly, he took it. Gradually they became friends and Larry began to help Ed whenever he needed it.

Larry had a job at a local factory. When they went on strike, Larry found extra jobs. As winter set in jobs became scarce. Using coal for heat was expensive, so they bought little and used it sparingly until finally they could afford no more coal.

When Ed learned of their predicament he ordered a whole load of coal, paying for it himself.

Larry and his wife had a special lesson from their Master Teacher. They had given to Ed as an expression of their love for Christ, unreceptive as he seemed to be. Then Larry and his wife learned the joy of receiving as God met all their needs.

Christ has individually-designed lessons to help us share His love as we lift burdens of others. Then He helps us accept the ways He meets our needs.

Insight: As we learn to love others and share their burdens, we demonstrate God’s kindness. Then we are surprised at how God blesses us.
